Entrepreneurship, Before It Had a Name

Aligarh. Not a city that dreams are made of, you’d think. But geography has never defined ambition. Today, I want to share the story of a woman who proves that where you start doesn’t dictate how far you can go. She’s someone I’ve admired for years—the first entrepreneur I ever encountered, back when we didn’t even know the meaning of the word. This is the story of Sunita Varshney, a woman who turned challenges into stepping stones and built a legacy that inspires to this day.

Every now and then, life gives us a reason to celebrate — birthdays, retirements, weddings, and even, in today’s world, breakups too. These moments often call for something new, something beautiful to wear that marks the occasion. And sometimes, there’s no occasion at all; we simply want a fresh addition to our wardrobe.

Let me take you back to my hometown, Patna, to a time before malls existed. Back then, Patna Market, one of the city’s oldest and most loved shopping hubs, was the go-to destination. It had a charm that blended the old with the new, and it still holds a special place in the hearts of many. Boutiques were unheard of, and the shopping process was straightforward: you bought cloth material of your choice, took it to a tailor, and had it stitched. If your tailor was open to your design ideas and suggestions, you considered yourself incredibly lucky!

Back then in Patna, where did the women of Boring Canal Road go to shop for everything from nightgowns to sarees? Sunita Varshney quietly stepped into the spotlight. While most people embraced the hustle and chaos of markets and the joy of store-hopping, she offered something different — convenience and hyper-personalization. And let me gently remind you that this was not a time when people were discussing customer experience. She turned her small home into a shopping haven, inviting women to browse her carefully curated collection. With a knack for meaningful conversations and storytelling, she created an experience that was as enjoyable as it was unique.

Naturally, people loved her. My mother, my aunts — they were among her early admirers. And soon, word spread. Not through flashy ads or social media — there was no Instagram. Just genuine word-of-mouth. Her reputation was built on trust, quality, and connection.

This marked the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey — a 28-year-long story filled with setbacks, triumphs, and moments of overwhelming joy, yet always grounded in humility. Her story continues to inspire many, myself included.

Think about it. You get married, and everyone celebrates. But marriage alone isn’t the ultimate purpose for most of us. We’re here to leave a mark, to make a difference in the little time we have. For Sunita — who became Mrs. Sunita Varshney — the journey was anything but smooth. Born and raised in Aligarh, she stepped into her husband’s family in Patna in 1989, only to face a harsh reality: a dire financial situation that could have crushed many spirits. While others might resign themselves to such circumstances, Sunita refused to accept "this is just how it is" as her future. She knew she had to rewrite the narrative, no matter how steep the path ahead.

One room, one kitchen, and washroom. While I was all in to support my husband in his journey, I couldn't imagine my whole life like this. I had to do something.

With one thought, one idea, she took a step. And then there was no looking back. Now, if you're thinking that for a woman to build a business, on her own, what all she could experience? Backlash from the family, patriarchal notions, stereotypes, not enough capital, etc. But here's the twist.

My entrepreneurial journey started when I had no awareness of the concept. It's often the adversities that push us to think out of the box. I am fortunate enough that I had all the support I needed, from my husband and his family. There were other, deeply personal challenges staring into my face. It was an unspoken battle.

Sunita brought 2-3 sarees along with her from her parents' home and made her first sale of Rs. 80. Encouraged by the idea that this could work, she started stitching some clothes as well. And it started picking up. More visitors turning into actual customers and it's remarkable how most of them have stayed loyal and committed to her for all these years.

This is the time when there was no social media to glorify your little wins, be more visible, or influence others. It was all about the grind. "It still is", she says.

While her work flourished, her personal life brought its own set of challenges — a balancing act that many women navigate even today. She had to take care of her husband who was struggling with a rare medical condition while raising her two daughters. It's amazing how infectious someone's energy is. These young girls absorbed every act of kindness and courage their mother displayed and stepped up to support her in every way they could. What began as one woman's journey soon transformed into a collective force — a resilient, unstoppable army of strong female energy. Determined to brave through all odds and show up for each other.

When I would be away for work, shopping resources and catering to customers, my elder one took care of the younger one, stepping into my shoes. Education, I wanted to ensure that they get the best of it. I kept going.

What I truly admire in women like Sunita Varshney and my mother – they choose to NOT complain, they choose to make the most of what they have, and create the best out of it. It's always a choice, right? There's no limit to what they can achieve – not even the sky. Every time, I think about people like her, about what they have gone through, and there are much worse situations, all I have to ask myself or anyone is: what's your excuse?

Everything that Sunita Aunty, as we affectionately call her, was working hard for was building a business that could help her thrive and win in life. And she did with Sboutique, carving out her own space.

Today, the city is filled with countless boutiques offering a plethora of options, yet we still find ourselves returning to hers. Sure, we admire her journey and the loyalty she has inspired over the years. But there’s something more—a connection, an experience, and a legacy that keeps us coming back.

It's the overall experience. You get to sit and chat with her. Share your story and listen to hers. No body's is hovering like a bee on your head to buy. You take your own sweet time to finalize your options. The collection is diverse and trust me when I say this, the tailoring is top-notch. She takes pride in her loyal employee, a true artisan who has stood by her side through all the highs and lows of running a business. Together, they’ve adapted to evolving times while staying true to the essence of quality and personal touch.

A celebration of the human spirit

In a world where success stories often come wrapped in glamour and grandeur, hers stands out as one built on quiet grit and genuine connections. She didn’t just build a business; she cultivated a community, inspired loyalty, and set a benchmark for what it means to balance ambition with authenticity.

Her story reminds us that entrepreneurship isn’t just about profits or recognition — it’s about purpose. It’s about making the most of what you have, turning challenges into opportunities, and proving that no dream is too big, no beginning too small.

From a small room in her home in Patna to becoming a trusted name in the city, Sunita has truly come a long way. Her journey is far from over, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for her. If you're in Patna — or planning to visit — make sure to stop by for an unforgettable shopping experience. You'll love how true they are to their brand promise: We bring you the perfect blend of trend and elegance at prices that won’t break the bank. With us, you can always trust in the quality of both our materials and our pricing.
